New light and battery solutions under development

After the test period in March we have continued to work on new light and battery solutions, for next generations of co-creative tangibles. Even if we were very satisfied with the use and experience of Wave Carpet’s interactive bubble field, we knew it was very fragile. We therefore experiment to see if we can improve the durability of the interactive and lighting surfaces.

      

Next generation will be mobile tangibles. We did not finalized testing of   Wave Orange, which is wireless and based on iPhone/iPod  and our own breakout card iDevice. We therefore continue on the experimentations of breakout solutions to Android and iPhone/iPod. First we have focused on finding one satisfying chargeable battery solution to run all the light, smartphone and breakout card on one single battery, which means we have to rebuild and redesign the light solution based on 5volt .

Started testing 2nd Generation – WAVE

On Friday March 2nd we started the action based empirical study of the 2nd generation of RHYME co-creative tangibles,  Wave.  The empirical study which we carried out at Haug School and Resource center continued the whole of March 2012, according to the RHYME project plan. Below you will find some examples of different interaction forms the Wave carpet offers. We do not publish pictures of the children participating in the study of ethical reasons.

RHYME at Culture in the Information Society conference

Karette Stensæth presented RHYME at the Culture and Society 2011 conference in Oslo the 14. December 2011.  The title of the lecure were  “Singing furniture – in the intersection between ICT, design and music”.  From the conference program: “Through the conference we want to show that culture is a key contributor to economic growth, health, self respect, happiness, knowledge, learning and tolerance. This challenges traditional ways of understanding cultural policy.  A modern cultural nation must invest in the world’s leading artistic achievements, make your living culture accessible to all and use culture as an effective tool to achieve important social objectives.“

RHYME at Ambience 2011

Birgitta Cappelen and Anders-Petter Andersson presented their paper “Designing Smart Textile for Music and Health” at the Ambience11 conference in Borås the 28. November 2011. “The Ambience conference focuses on the intersections and interfaces between technology, art and design. The first international conference in the Ambience series was held in Tampere, Finland in 2005. In Tampere 2005 the basic theme was “Intelligent ambience, including intelligent textiles, smart garments, intelligent home and living environment”.

The paper presents the exploratory and reseach-by-design work related to the smart textile development in 2nd generation of RHYME prototypes, what we call Wave.

RHYME awarded best project of the year

During the opening of the Centre for Design Research at Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) 17th November 2011, RHYME was awarded as the best project of the year.

The Centre for Design Research (DR) is the third research center at AHO. DR`s vision is “to make consistent and quality-led contributions to international research in diverse fields of design, through practice based inquiry and critical, informed reflection.” The center Director is Professor Andrew Morrison. Unique Musical Interaction and E-textile student workshop

Musical interaction at AHOThe RHYME project members Fredrik Olofsson, Birgitta Cappelen and Anders-Petter Andersson contribute to  the collaborative student course between AHO and KhiO on “Musical Interaction and E-textile”.  The first week of the three week course ended with a presentation on Friday the 21. October at AHO. The AHO students have worked on musical interaction and the relation to the musical artefacts’ shape and structure in a chosen use context. The KhiO students had in the same week an introduction to electronics.

The next week (Oct 24-28) the KhiO and AHO students worked together with focus on the textile qualities and created their own e-textile, embedding the sound, sensors, wire and light into the textile.

The last week they put it all together and created a new Musical Artefact based on RHYME iDevice and iPhone/iPod Touch. The workshop ended with a public presentation and an exhibition at KhiO the 4. November. The projects->

RHYME related student project won 2nd price

Ideprisen 2011 The UiO students that developed the application “Music Impro App” won 2nd price and 20.000 NOK in the Idea Price contest Inven2 for 2011. “The intention of the Music Impro App project was to develop a prototype application that may support the goals set by the RHYME project through the use of common smart phones running traditional software platforms.”
The thought behind the Idea Price (Ideprisen) is to challenge students from different research environments at UiO to present an innovative idea with economical potential.
