During the NordiChi 2012 Conference  Jo Herstad and Harald Holone presented their paper “Making sense of co-creative tangibles through the concept of familiarity“. The paper discusses Universal Design and Tangible Interaction through the concept of familiarity. Familiarity is described by engagement, understanding and an intimate or close relationship between the user and the technology. Familiarity is proposed as a concept for understanding and developing Tangible Interaction solutions for all. The Conference will be held at IT-University in Copenhagen October 14th-17th 2012.

RHYME at ArcInTex

RHYME member Birgitta Cappelen has been invited to be a member in the ArcInTex network initiated by the Swedish School of Textiles at the University of Borås. The first workshop will take place in Borås 24-25 September 2012. ArcInTex is a future arena for people and institutions working in the field of smart textiles (e-textile) and environments from the field of Architecture, Interaction design and Textile Art and design.

Reflect in Berlin

This year’s co-creative tangibles are mobile and  wireless. We have developed 3 new, additional to last years, hardware mobile platforms to test different concepts and combinations of hardware and software. It has been a challenge to include speakers, microphone and sensors into the same object, so we have developed different ways to include a sound source. The first prototype is Reflect, where we use RFID to collect music samples, and touch and bend sensor to dynamic mix, manipulate musically and play on and with the samples.  Reflect uses an iPod/iPhone and is programmed in SuperCollider.

MusicalFieldsForever (RHYME development team Fredrik, Birgitta and Anders-Petter) were invited to exhibit at the Musicmakers event in Berlin 14. September 2012. At the event we made and staged an installation version of Reflect. Very many people came and tested and experienced Reflect, which gave us invaluable input.

New 3rd Generation solutions under development

During July and August the RHYME development team (Fredrik, Anders-Petter and Birgitta) is working intensively to develop new solutions for light, sensory stimulation, interaction, battery, projection and mobile musical communication based on smart phones. Wireless communication and devices have large limitations compared to wired solutions, that we developed in Generation 2 with the Wave Carpet. Smart phones and their intended use also represent great challenges for our tangible musical concepts regarding communication between devices, embedding, joint battery solutions and system control.
Below are some of the many material, colour, surface and sensory explorations.

      
      
Further we are working on the mobile hardware platform to offer all tangible interaction forms we like to include, based on smart phone technology. First we are rebuilding our iDevice  breakout card to offer a joint battery solution and other interaction forms than we had in the first version. (We used the first iDevice card in Wave Orange and in all student projects fall 2011.) Up to now we have developed 4 different mobile plattforms that we call iDevice 1.0, iDevice 1.1, iDevice 1.5, jDevice and kDevice.
Further we are exploring and testing other platforms on the market, where there are many. But designing social, empowering, tangible, musical interaction (musicking) are very demanding on many levels, so we struggle with many limitations. We are also exploring alternative projection solutions that are more suitable in a home.

RHYME at the 2nd International Health Humanities Conference

Karette Stensæth presented a paper with the title A life with ”smart things”:  Is it a more human, healthy and/or social life?  at the The Second International Health Humanities Conference –  Music, Health, and Humanity.  According to music therapist Kenneth Bruscia: ”Health is to become one´s fullest potential as a human being”.  The paper discusses philosophical perspectives connected to health in relation to music and the use of smart things. The conference took place in New York August 9-11 2012.

RHYME presented 2 fullpapers at ICCHP 2012

RHYME presented and published  two fullpapers at ICCHP 2012 in Linz in July. ICCHP is one of the most important conferences concerning technology and disability. The papers is published in Proceedings by Springer Verlag.
One of the papers with the title “RHYME – Musicking for all” is written by Harald Holone and Jo Herstad. The paper discusses familiarity in Tangible Interaction design related to Universal Design.  The title on the other paper is “Musicking Tangibles for empowerment” and is written by Birgitta Cappelen and Anders-Petter Andersson. The paper presents a novel approach towards understanding and design of interactive music technology for people with special needs, what they call Musicking Tangibles. The approach combine  perspectives from culture oriented Tangible interaction design with empowerment and resource oriented Music Therapy, and criticizes and broaden the traditional instrument and interface oriented perspective on music technology. RHYME keynote and workshop at NMTC 2012

We are very proud and happy that Karette Stensæth was invited to hold a keynote lecture at the 7th Nordic Music Therapy Congress. The theme of the conference is “Music therapy models, methods and techniques “. Karette’s lecture about the RHYME project was named “Musical furniture? Health and therapy potentials playing on and with smart things”.  Further, Birgitta Cappelen and Anders-Petter Andersson arranged a workshop during the conference with the title “Design of Musicking Interactive Things”.

The conference was held in Jyväskylä in Finland from 13 to 17 of June in 2012.

RHYME at Universal Design 2012

The RHYME project were extensively represented at the most important international conference within Universal Design, UD2012.  Birgitta Cappelen and Anders-Petter Andersson presented two papers with the titles “Designing for Musicking” and “Openness for Diversity”, and Jo Herstad presented his paper “Interaction with pillows”.

The UD2012 biannual conference and was this time held in Oslo from June 11-13 2012.

Open presentation at Haug School May 30th

On May 30th  all children, parents, teachers and employees at Haug School and Resource center are invited to an open presentation about RHYME. Karette Stensæth who is a part time music therapist at Haug will lead the orientation in the “Gymsal” that lasts from 17.15  to 18.45.  Everyone will also have the opportunity to try out the co-creative tangibles ORFI and Wave.
